Almost two decades on, Amanda Burton has made her Silent Witness comeback — and viewers have lost the plot watching the six-part special.

The much-loved actress was back to her Sam Ryan best to mark the 25th anniversary series. Having starred in 54 episodes, she first appeared as the lead pathologist in 1996 and left in 2004.

Fans were overcome with delight about the nostalgic trip down TV memory lane.

One viewer tweeted: "Watching Amanda Burton return as Prof. Sam Ryan in #SilentWitness gave me all the chills. Brought back memories of watching her kick a** as a female scientist during my teenage years. She inspired us to become kick a** scientists ourselves."

"*SCREAMS IN 1990's PATHOLOGIST!* Sam Ryan played by Amanda Burton is on my screen," exclaimed another viewer.

"Great to see Amanda Burton back in #SilentWitness again! @EmiliaFox also on fine form as ever," said one fan.

Another added: "Great to see Amanda Burton back."

One viewer penned: "Great to see this brilliant drama back and what way to mark 25th anniversary than to bring back a Silent Witness old favourite Sam Ryan aka Amanda Burton."

Speaking exclusively to The Sun last year, Amanda shared: “I am so excited to be returning to Silent Witness and stepping back into Sam Ryan’s shoes – with a difference!

“Audiences can look forward to plenty of twists and turns as they discover what Sam’s been doing since leaving the Lyell.”

Fellow cast members Emilia Fox (Nikki Alexander), David Caves (Jack Hodgson) and Genesis Lynea (Simone Tyler) join Amanda in the show.

Emilia Fox said previously: “It is such a delight and thrill to be working with Amanda.

“To have Sam Ryan back again at the heart of the show is the greatest way of all to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Silent Witness.”

Lawrence Till, Executive Producer, BBC Studios Production, said: “I am delighted that Amanda agreed to return to Silent Witness for its Silver Anniversary.

“Silent Witness has a large and loyal audience and remains as popular as it has ever been with audiences regularly consolidating at over 6 million viewers.

“It is fantastic to have Sam Ryan at the centre of the series again alongside our other Lyell characters for a monumental story told in six parts.”
