It might not have found a permanent home on the small-screen, but The Time Traveler’s Wife is getting another adaptation.
Former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat was behind the latest re-imagining of Audrey Niffenegger's bestselling novel, but unfortunately for fans, the series won’t continue to a season two.
On the HBO Max and Sky series, Theo James starred as time traveller Henry, while Game of Thrones actress Rose Leslie played Clare, but this upcoming version will see the love story hit the stage.
The Time Traveller’s Wife: A New Musical will premiere at the Storyhouse theatre in Chester next month, before moving on to London’s West End.
David Hunter will take over the role of Henry following stints in Waitress, Kinky Boots and Holby City.
Pretty Woman: The Musical star Joanna Woodward will play Clare, while Joss Stone and Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart will be behind the score.
The musical’s synopsis reads: “Their love story is like no other. And yet, it’s like all others. They meet, fall in love and marry – but not in that order. Henry travels through time and through Clare’s past, present and future. Their love is the ultimate test and the greatest of romances, beset with surprises, pain and adventures.”
Moffat had previously shared his excitement of bringing the beloved novel to life, and did have ideas for a series two before it was cancelled by HBO.
In a statement (via TV Line), he said “This is a dream project for me. I have always loved Audrey Niffenegger's extraordinary, moving novel and it has inspired me many times, so to be adapting it for television is the thrill of a lifetime.
"Working with David Nutter is a joy and an honour already, and with Rose Leslie and Theo James as Clare and Henry, and Natasha Lopez and Desmin Borges as Charisse and Gomez, this is going to be the love story we need right now."
The story was previously turned into a feature-length film in 2009 starring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana.
The Time Traveller’s Wife: A New Music begins at the Storyhouse in Chester on Friday 30th September and runs until Saturday 15th October. Tickets can be found at storyhouse.com.
