The Eurovision Song Contest is returning to the UK for the first time in 25 years this weekend and countries from all over Europe will be competing to win the grand prize.

There will be 37 artists taking to the stage at the M&S Arena at Liverpool on Saturday (13th May) in the bid to become this year’s winner.

In 2022, Ukraine’s Kalush Orchestra took home the prize with their song Stefania and the UK’s Sam Ryder finished in second place with Space Man. This year, Mae Muller will be representing the UK with her track I Wrote A Song, and she will also be hoping to take home first place.

So, what exactly does the winner of Eurovision get?

Here’s everything you need to know.

What is the prize for winning Eurovision?

So, according to Eurovision, the artist who tops the leaderboard after the jury and public vote will “perform once again and take home the iconic glass microphone trophy.

“The winning country will traditionally be given the honour of hosting the next Eurovision Song Contest.”

After winning last year, the Ukraine should have hosted this year’s competition, but due to the ongoing conflict with Russia, that could not happen. As a result, the UK were given the honour instead as runners up.

If Mae Muller was to win tonight in Liverpool, the UK would have another chance to host the contest again in 2024, as there is no rule against winning more than one year in a row.

One thing the victorious singer does not receive is any financial reward, but the idea is they would make money from their success following the competition.

For example, 2021 winners Maneskin went on to garner huge commercial success off the back of Eurovision and have even been booked for Glastonbury 2023.

The Eurovision Song Contest kicks off on Saturday 13th May at 8pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
