Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season two is coming earlier than expected.

The much-anticipated second instalment of Prime Video’s Lord of the Rings prequel series will begin airing on the streaming platform on 29th August, several months ahead of the autumn release date fans had been expecting.

The show’s release date was revealed along with a teaser trailer for the second season, in which viewers’ can get their first glimpse at how the series will turn its focus on the legendary big bad Sauron (Charlie Vickers).

The show’s official synopsis reads: “In Season Two of The Rings of Power, Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), without army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will.

“Building on Season One’s epic scope and ambition, the new season plunges even its most beloved and vulnerable characters into a rising tide of darkness, challenging each to find their place in a world that is increasingly on the brink of calamity.

“Elves and dwarves, orcs and men, wizards and Harfoots… as friendships are strained and kingdoms begin to fracture, the forces of good will struggle ever more valiantly to hold on to what matters to them most of all… each other.”

While season two of The Rings of Power is still a little while away, Amazon are reportedly already beginning early work on season three, and the series is reportedly planned to run for five seasons.

Future seasons may see more competition from other Lord of the Rings projects, however. Last week (on 9th May) it was confirmed Warner Bros are beginning work on a new film based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s universe, entitled Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

Original trilogy director Peter Jackson will be a producer on the project, meanwhile Gollum star Andy Serkis will star as the titular character and direct the film.

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will return to Prime Video on Thursday, 29th August.
