Is it better than tomato ketchup or brown sauce?

Felicity Cloake has caused a divide between Britons after suggesting a bacon sandwich should be topped with marmalade rather than ketchup or brown sauce.

The award-winning culinary writer is something of a British breakfast connoisseur and has recently released her book Red Sauce, Brown Sauce: A British Breakfast Odyssey- so she knows what she’s talking about.

Speaking to the Guardian, Felicity dropped a rather controversial opinion- Marmalade and bacon sarnies are better than ketchup ones.

However, people on Twitter are divided on the ingredient, with some horrified by the suggestion and others saying they had been using marmalade on their bacon sandwiches for years.

Felicity said: “I feel like a bad British person for saying this- I much prefer English mustard in a bacon sandwich. And marmalade.

She explained: “Think about it- ham is often glazed with mustard and honey. A friend introduced me to it, and it feels like a Damascene moment every time I eat one.”

For her new book, Felicity has been speaking to people across the UK to find out once and for all whether red or brown sauce goes better with a bacon sarnie.

She’s not the only one who thinks this way either. Ex-Blue bassist and cheesemaker Alex James says the same.

Speaking to The Sun, he said his perfect bacon bap is one with marmalade.

He said: “Bacon takes other flavours really well, so mustard, red, brown- roll them all out.

He added: “Marmalade is surprisingly good, too. It sounds spooky, but it’s no weirder than honey-roast ham.”

Of course, people had a lot to say about this food combination and took to social media yesterday to share their thoughts.

One person wrote: “I like an occasional bacon sandwich but I would draw the line at MARMALADE! Never”.

Another agreed, saying: “Marmalade shouldn’t be anywhere near a bacon sandwich. Couldn’t think of anything worse.”

However, others were more open to the idea.

One person said: “This sounds like it might just work beautifully…”

Another wrote: “Going out on a limb here. But if you are okay with sweet chutney in Cheese sandwiches and with Apple sauce (look, it's apple pie filling, let’s not lie) on pork or cranberry jam (its jam) on turkey…marmalade in bacon sandwiches is fine.”

Some even said they had been using the food combination for a while, with one user writing: “I have been advocating marmalade on a bacon butty for years!”
