After a long flight home, the last thing you want to experience is a lengthy diversion, but for some Gatwick-bound travellers, that’s exactly the fear they had!

Prankster Max Fosh had Gatwick-bound passengers panicking after placing a ‘Welcome to Luton’ sign near a landing path.

The sign, made out of some tarpaulin and pegs, could be seen clearly from the air, and so had many people thinking they may have a long journey back to their car.

The prank was made on someone’s private land, but Max explained on the Justin Dealey Radio show (via Ladbible) that he asked very nicely to set up the hilarious prank on someone’s property.

He explained that he also has six weeks of permission from the landowners, so anyone travelling back to the UK anytime soon should keep an eye out!

Max said: “It's my job to make videos and my videos are all about doing silly things, to put a smile on people's faces but just to be silly, I'm glad this stunt has gone down well."

"I went door-knocking on fields next to Heathrow and Gatwick and a lovely couple said, 'yeah we've got a 80m (262ft) long patch of land we don't have any use for', so I said 'great can I get my tarpaulin out and start hammering pegs into the ground?"

While a shock when travelling back to Gatwick, lots of passengers did see the funny side, with one Twitter user sharing a snap of the sign and writing: “Flying in to Gatwick, just before landing this is what is out the left window… great prank, deffo at Gatwick.”

Another said: “Nothing makes for a stress-free arrival in the UK quite like the words WELCOME TO LUTON currently spelled out in giant white letters in a field under the final approach to Gatwick Airport”
