Netflix series Stranger Things has gone from strength to strength over its four seasons so far, yet David Harbour, who plays Jim Hopper in the sci-fi show, has admitted that he thought it would be a “disaster”.
Speaking on BBC’s The One Show last night (25th July), he said: “I remember when we were shooting the first season. We were down in Atlanta, Netflix had given us a budget of about $20… Halfway through, I remember my hair person coming up to me, about episode four we were shooting, and she said, 'I don't think it's going to work’.”
He continued: “By the time we wrapped, I thought we wouldn't get a second season, we'd be the first Netflix show ever to never get a second season.”
The actor added: “We thought no one would watch it, it was going to be a disaster.”
Of course, history has proved the opposite to be true, with the most recent season of the Netflix show proving to be absolutely massive, to the extent that Kate Bush’s song Running Up That Hill went to number one in the UK charts for the first time after featuring in the show, despite the single having been released all the way back in 1985.
Similarly, Master Of Puppets by Metallica shot up the charts after being played on guitar by Eddie Munson as the season concluded.
Stranger Things will return for one more season, its fifth. However, with season four having only just finished, we might have a bit of a wait to see how the series comes to an end.
Make sure you catch up with David Harbour’s appearance on The Graham Norton Radio Show with Waitrose on Virgin Radio while you wait for series five to drop!
If you haven’t watched Stranger Things seasons 1-4 yet, then they are now streaming on Netflix.
