Did you know Spaghetti Junction got its name because it resembled a messy bowl of pasta? Fifty years on, Heinz has created tins of limited edition motorway-inspired Spaghetti Junction shapes.

Once described by the Birmingham Evening Mail as a "cross between a plate of spaghetti and an unsuccessful attempt at a Staffordshire knot", the motorway opened on May 24 1972 and connects the north with the south.

Heinz wrote on their social media page: "Tomorrow marks the 50th Anniversary of National Highways Spaghetti Junction, the most famous interchange in Britain, and we're launching 500 limited edition cans to celebrate!"

Gina Cock at Heinz Pasta said: "It’s been incredible to see the nation’s demand for these very special tins, celebrating the 50th anniversary of Spaghetti Junction.

"We knew merging two British icons, Heinz Spaghetti and the original Spaghetti Junction, would cause a frenzy but we were very surprised to see the cans sell out in just a few hours with heavy traffic to our website."

And heavy traffic on Spaghetti Junction...
