The BRIT Awards will double the number of best artist nominees for the 2024 ceremony in a bid to address criticism they received about diversity.

In 2022, BRITs organisers introduced the Artist of the Year category to replace the Male and Female equivalent in a view to be more inclusive, but in 2023, there were no women shortlisted for the prize.

Now, the awards bosses have confirmed they will increase the number of nominees eligible to win from five to 10 to create a more balanced field.

Not only that, but the BRITs have also introduced a new Best R&B Act category to promote those in the genre who previously had to battle it out with mainstream artists in the best pop/R&B category.

The British Phonographic Industry body runs the BRIT Awards, and chief exec Dr. Jo Twist said about the changes: “We look forward to celebrating another brilliant year in music, and we are all working hard to deliver another memorable show that will promote the incredible breadth of British and international talent that we have seen flourish and succeed over the past twelve months.

“The BRITs is committed to making the show as inclusive and representative as possible, the changes to this year’s categories are part of an ongoing process of evolution, and we will continue to review, listen and learn.”

Harry Styles won the Best Artist prize at the BRITs in 2023 and dedicated his award to the female artists that didn’t get a look in.

He said at the time: “I'm very aware of my privilege up here tonight, so this award is for Rina [Sawayama], Charli [XCX], Florence, Mabel and Becky [Hill], thank you so much."

The full category list for 2024 will be as follows:

  1. Artist of the Year
  2. Group of the Year
