Singer-songwriter Emeli Sandé has released her fifth album, titled How Were We To Know?, and the Scottish hit-maker stopped by Virgin Radio's The Stool of Rock to perform and discuss her origins in music all the way to now.

The Read All About It singer arrived at Virgin Radio studios for The Chris Evans Breakfast Show with cinch on Thursday (23rd November) and belted out not just new song All This Love, but also a smashing cover of Eurythmics’ hit Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of These) too (check back to to watch the Stool of Rock session).

Watch Emeli Sandé’s performance of All This Love below:

Speaking to Chris and the gang about how she got her start, Emeli credited music producer Naughty Boy for “sending beats” when she first started out.

Discussing how she formulates her music, Emeli explained: “When you get those songs and it just flows out and you feel like you've kind of uncovered them, those usually end up being the most successful ones because you’ve found them somewhere.”

The singer-songwriter began writing for other people when she started out, and penned for the likes of Leona Lewis and Susan Boyle, which she described as getting “an insight into the business to understand what goes on.”

Writing a heartbreak ballad or an upbeat pop hit involves taking a big deep dive into your emotions, according to Emeli, who insisted that it’s important to have a relationship with yourself before anyone else.

She elaborated: “As soon as you're alone or as soon as there's silence, you have to face yourself so I think it's really important to invest time on getting to like yourself at least and enjoy being alone. I'm happy in love but at the same time it’s so true you can only give as much love as you can give yourself so it's a good place to start.

“I think falling deep in love, like that soul intertwining thing, that's where the hurt comes. You should still feel whole by yourself. It just takes a while getting used to that separation.”
