Inside Out 2: Emotions Run High

Leading the charge is Pixar's Inside Out 2, which has charmed audiences with its emotional rollercoaster, grossing a whopping $355.1 million. Clearly, Joy, Sadness, and the gang are still very much in control of our hearts—and wallets! After a $155 million debut, it’s no surprise this sequel topped the charts. Pixar has struck gold once again, proving that audiences crave a blend of heartfelt storytelling and stunning animation.

Dune: Part Two Dazzles

In second place, Dune: Part Two has transported fans back to the desert planet of Arrakis, grossing a stellar $282.1 million. Denis Villeneuve's epic saga continues to draw in sci-fi aficionados, cementing its place as a modern classic. With sandworms and political intrigue galore, this film is a cinematic feast that keeps audiences coming back for more.

Monsters and Martial Arts: Godzilla, Kong, and Po

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire stomped its way to $195.8 million, proving that audiences can't get enough of giant monsters duking it out. Meanwhile, Kung Fu Panda 4 has Po the Panda kicking his way to $193.5 million, delivering laughs and thrills in equal measure. DreamWorks' beloved franchise shows no signs of slowing down, with Po's latest adventure capturing the imaginations of both young and old.

Apes and Action: Kingdom and Bad Boys

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes swung into the fifth spot with $164.3 million, continuing its legacy of thrilling, thought-provoking storytelling. On the other end of the spectrum, Bad Boys: Ride or Die revved up the action with $146.9 million, as Will Smith and Martin Lawrence once again prove they're the kings of buddy cop movies.

Nostalgia and Newcomers: Ghostbusters and IF

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire conjured up $113.1 million, matching the excitement of its predecessors. Family film IF, directed by John Krasinski, found its footing with $106.6 million, showing that new ideas still have a place in the hearts of moviegoers.

Musical Magic and Stunt Spectacles

The biopic Bob Marley: One Love hit a high note with $96.8 million, celebrating the legendary musician’s life and music. The Fall Guy, starring Ryan Gosling, rounds out the top ten with $90.0 million, opening the summer season with a bang despite a modest $28 million debut.

A Year of Ups and Downs

The box office in 2024 has been a wild ride. March saw sequels revitalising theatres, with Dune: Part Two and Kung Fu Panda 4 leading the charge. February brought a total gross of $361 million, with Bob Marley: One Love outperforming expectations. January kicked off with $495 million in box office takings, led by Mean Girls and The Beekeeper.

Cinema's Resilient Magic

Despite the challenges, the allure of the cinema remains strong. The communal experience of watching a film on the big screen is irreplaceable. As Rotten Tomatoes has shown, people are still willing to head to theaters, popcorn in hand, to be transported to different worlds.
