The latest Scream movie is clearly killing it at the box office, because the next episode in the horror franchise has already been confirmed, and production will start in just a few months.

Yes, even though the fifth Scream film is still playing in cinemas, we can already look forward to being scared out of our skins in the next installment, as filming is set to begin this summer.

The announcement comes with the latest offering, slightly confusingly titled Scream (the same name as the original movie from 1996), taking $106.7million (£78.4million) globally at the box office since it landed in January.

The current Scream film directly follows events in Scream 4, and sees the franchise’s stars, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, all returning for another slashfest in Woodsboro, where a new killer as put on the Ghostface mask, a quarter-of-a-century after the first murders in the formerly sleepy town.

Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will return to direct the sixth step in the Scream story, while Guy Busick and James Vanderbilt will write the script.

Spyglass and Paramount said in a joint statement: “We are tremendously grateful to the fans around the world who enthusiastically received our film. We can’t wait for audiences to see what Radio Silence, writers Jamie & Guy and Project X have in store for our Woodsboro family.”

Created by legendary director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson, Scream first film hit cinemas all the way back in 1996, and became instantly iconic, not least because of its incredible opening scene involving Drew Barrymore. Following a series of meta sequels, the latest Scream flick was the first not to be directed by Craven, who died in August 2015.

Revealing the news of another film in the franchise, the official Scream Twitter account wrote: “These days you gotta have a sequel. I’m coming back for more.”
