Gentleman Jack: New look and release date teased for long-awaited series 2

Get ready for Gentleman Jack as it seems we’re not far off the release of season two. 

US broadcaster HBO, which airs the series across the pond, has shared a brand new look at the period drama, and also made sure to tease the release date for good measure. 

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, HBO uploaded a photo of lead Suranne Jones alongside co-star Sophie Rundle, who plays her love interest Ann Walker. 

In the snap, the on-screen pair are taking a selfie on the set - all dressed up in their costumes, and the tweet simply reads: “Love thy selfie. #GentlemanJack returns this spring to HBOMax.”

Surrane stars as lesbian landowner Anne Lister, who returns to her ancestral home in Yorkshire to restore her uncle’s estate, Shibden Hall. 

The story is based on Anne’s real life, and taken from a collection of her diaries, and mainly written in code to hide the number of affairs she had. 

The first series aired in the US in April 2019, and a month later in the UK, and now it seems it’ll be following suit for its next big premiere.

Much like other TV productions over the last two years, the series had setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will likely air later than originally anticipated.

Returning stars will include Gemma Whelan, who plays Anne’s sister Marian, and Lydia Leonard, who stars as Anne’s ex Marianna Lawton. 

The Thick Of It star Joanna Scanlan is set to be the new face of the series, as Isabella ‘Tib’ Norcliffe, who was one of Anne’s previous partners. 

The end of series one saw Anne and Ann taking a sacrament together and giving each other rings in church, sealing their love in the only way they could, before moving into Shibden Hall together. 

Show creator Sally Wainwright previously revealed what lies ahead for the couple ahead of series two. 

Speaking to Digital Spy, she revealed: “They move into Shibden together in series two and it's about how they negotiate their married life, conspicuously in public, and how they deal with their detractors and the effect that has on their relationship as well.

Sally added she doesn’t see the show slowing down any time soon. She continued: "Obviously we've got season two, which is fantastic, and I hope it will continue on after that. There's no end of stories, the diaries, this huge wealth of knowledge.”

Gentleman Jack will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer later in the spring.
