Leonardo DiCaprio and director Martin Scorsese have joined forces once again for a new naval drama The Wager.

The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, And Murder is an adaptation of David Grann’s non-fiction book of the same name and will be hitting cinemas next spring.

Set in the 1740s, the story follows a boat of 30 emaciated men that washes up on the coast of Brazil. It transpires that the men were the last surviving crew members of a British ship that was chasing a Spanish vessel and ended up crashing onto an island in South America’s Patagonia region.

After surviving the treacherous journey, the crew are made heroes. However, six months later, another ship shows up on the coast of Chile containing three sailors who accuse the surviving crew of being mutineers.

In a bid to find the truth, the British Admiralty sets up a special trial to discover what exactly happened on the island, unravelling a story of a captain and his crew mates struggling to survive extreme climates and battling their own human natures.

It’s not clear what role DiCaprio will be taking on yet or who else will be joining the cast, but all will be revealed in due course.

This comes after the actor paired up with Scorsese for Killers Of The Flower Moon, a film also adapted from a David Grann novel.

The movie is set in 1920s Oklahoma where a string of murders has taken place. The victims are all from the same oil-wealthy Osage Nation, and things start to ramp up when the FBI get involved.

No official release date has yet been announced for the movie, but considering it is still in post-production, we can probably expect it sometime next year.

In other DiCaprio news, the star recently had a new tree species named after him for his hard work to stop logging in an African rainforest.
